the custom vocabulary.

A dictionary of original and repurposed terms used by the maker to describe elements of the fabrication process.

To assist clients and readers in navigating our workshop logs, we have compiled a glossary of terms: 'The Settling' refers to allowing cast metal to rest for months to relieve inner stress before scraping. 'Zero Clearance' is the stage where parts are fitted so precisely that no light can pass between them.

'Gravity Balance' is the use of suspended weights to drive circular alignment, avoiding any reliance on external power grids. Understanding these terms is the first step toward understanding our craft.
