case study 02: apparatus zero.

An exploration of a horizontal copper and granite layout built to track solar noon with high-precision gnomons.

Case Study 02 records the development of Apparatus Zero, a dial system built for an open courtyard in Tuscany. The work layers fine slate surfaces with a heavy copper track, calibrated to align perfectly with the local coordinate.

A hand-milled bronze pointer casts a shadow that narrows to a shadow at absolute noon, recording the passage of solar seasons across the metal. All components were finished by hand, utilizing gravity-fed fasteners to anchor the work directly into the earth without secondary joints.
