case study 14: dual construct.

An in-depth study of a heavy vertical weight structure designed to balance on a single hand-ground sapphire pivot.

Case Study 14 details the creation of a vertical weight assembly commissioned by a client in Zurich. The challenge was to balance a heavy steel beam on a single pivot point, allowing the entire system to tilt slowly over a twelve-hour cycle.

We chose an oil-quenched steel alloy for the frame, seasoned for six months, and tipped the pivot with a hand-ground sapphire cup. The counterweight, cast from refined copper, was adjusted in micro-increments until its movement became completely silent. The result is a construct of immense stability, responding with perfect calmness to the air currents of its room.
